Normative Resolution for the Adoption and Regulation of the Affirmative Action Policy of the PPG-Classical Literature/USP
Normative Resolution 01/2023
The Coordinating Committee of the Postgraduate Program in Classical Literature at the University of São Paulo (PPG-Classical Literature/USP), in the exercise of its powers, resolves to adopt and regulate an Affirmative Action Policy for the admission, support, and retention of students in the Master’s and Doctoral courses.
1. Admission
1.1. The selection processes for the Master’s and Doctoral programs will include a minimum of 20% for candidates who self-identify as Black, Brown, or Indigenous, 5% for candidates who self-identify as persons with disabilities, and 5% for candidates who self-identify as trans (transvestites, transgender, or transsexual individuals).
1.2. In the admission notice for open competition and reserved slots, the selection process will consist of three stages: (a) a foreign language exam, which is eliminatory; (b) a specialized exam, which is eliminatory, in Greek or Latin language or in the reception of Greco-Latin literature; (c) an evaluation of the research project and LATTES curriculum.
1.3. For open competition slots (70% of the total slots), the candidates with the highest ranking will be selected. Candidates who qualify and, at the end of the process, rank among the top positions will fill open competition slots, without affecting the reserved slots (20% for self-declared Black, Brown, and Indigenous candidates, 5% for self-declared candidates with disabilities, and 5% for self-declared trans individuals).
1.4. If there are no approved candidates for the reserved slots, they will be converted into open competition slots.
2. Retention
2.1. A Monitoring Committee, consisting of two faculty members and one student, will be established and will be responsible for:
a) Evaluating the Affirmative Action Policy, its impact, and effectiveness;
b) Supporting affirmative action students by addressing their needs;
c) Exploring affirmative action initiatives and proposals implemented in other postgraduate programs in the country, as well as within USP, with the goal of continually improving the existing affirmative action policy;
d) Seeking and disseminating strategies, resources, and methods to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities by identifying specific actions and programs at USP and other institutions.
2.2. The affirmative action policies must be submitted annually to the Program Coordinating Committee for review, where they will be evaluated for feasibility of implementation and possible expansion of reserved slots, in alignment with the resources available to support admitted students and the institutional structures of the PPG-Classical Literature and USP.
2.3. Candidates admitted through affirmative action slots will be eligible for scholarship allocation according to criteria set by the PPG-Classical Literature Scholarship Committee, which will consider affirmative action entry as a factor in scholarship distribution.
